The short version

You can read every page here without an account and without being tracked. If you make an account we keep your email address, your name, and the rooms you have marked. We do not sell any of it and we do not run advertising.

What we keep when you sign in

Signing in by email link stores your email address. Signing in with Google or Apple stores your email address and whatever name and profile picture they hand us, which is the standard basic profile and nothing more. We never receive your password.

After that, the only thing we record is what you mark: rooms you want to go to, rooms you have been to, and rooms you have dismissed. The dismissed list is private and never affects what other people see.

The mailing list

Creating an account also adds your email address to the hifimaps letter, which goes out occasionally when there is something worth sending. Every email carries an unsubscribe link and leaving the list does not affect your account. This is handled by MailerLite.

Your location

A room page can tell you how far away it is. That asks your browser for your position, works out the distance in the page, and shows you the answer. The coordinates are never sent to us and never stored. If you decline, everything else keeps working.

Who else touches it

Three companies process data on our behalf: Supabase stores the database and runs sign-in, Vercel serves the site, and MailerLite sends the letter. Mapbox serves the map tiles and sees the requests your browser makes for them.

We do not use analytics or advertising trackers, so there are no third-party cookies to consent to.

Counting visits

If you agree to it, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which rooms get opened. It sets one cookie, your address is truncated before it is stored, and we do not send anything to it for advertising. Nothing is set until you say yes, and saying no is remembered.

Changing your mind is a matter of clearing this site’s data in your browser, which forgets the answer and asks again.

Getting it deleted

You can do it yourself, without asking us and without waiting. Edit profile has a button at the bottom that closes the account: the sign-in, your name, your address, every room you marked, your private notes and ratings, and the newsletter subscription. It happens at once and we keep no copy.

A room you sent us that is already published stays on the map, with your name taken off it. The page is about the venue rather than about you, and the venue did not ask to be removed. Anything still waiting to be reviewed is deleted with the rest.

If you would rather we did it, write to hello@hifimaps.com from the address on the account and we will, without asking why.

Photographs

Photographs of rooms come from the venues themselves or from the named photographer, credited on every image. If you own one and want it taken down, write to the same address and it comes down immediately. See About for how we choose what to publish.
